  Sex Fest

Patience McKay and Clink’s bouncer Baron Shanks have a strong chemistry that they’ve seemingly ignored. When a threat against the Cartwells and McKays strikes too close to home, Baron tells Patience’s boyfriends to make room in her bed for one more.

Mark and Spenser McCoy aren’t blinded by love. They’re living out their country music dreams while Patience stays home managing a thriving fetish club business. When Baron professes his love for Patience, it comes as no surprise. The McCoys are relieved to know Patience has embraced someone who will keep her safe.

Before Patience and her men can enjoy their new relationship, they must find a way to keep everyone they love out of harm’s way. Soon, Baron cuts a deal with a mob boss bent on revenge and uncovers a shocking revelation about his past. Will his discovery help the Cartwells and McKays protect their families or move them closer to those who are determined to destroy them?

  DEDICATION

To Brent. We were an unlikely pair that somehow made this marriage “gig” work for nearly twenty-five years. Thank you for supporting my dreams while you pursued yours. You’re loved and appreciated.

Also to the many musicians who have “jammed” at our house: There are too many of you to count now, but I still remember your faces and above all else, your talent. Thank you for providing hours of continual inspiration.

And finally, to the women and men who are often stuck at home while their performing spouses are on the road—thank you for sharing your family members with the world.

  AUTHOR’S NOTE

One of the risks of writing under so many pen names is that every now and then, a writer will lose interest in a character or story. I never lost interest in Cowboy Sex. Even after all these years, it remains one of my favorite series, but as a writer, there was a specific challenge within the series. For whatever reason, I never really connected with Patience McKay even when Sex Holiday was originally created. Looking back, Patience’s first story was written because this writer thought she “needed” her own segment. However, I wasn’t entirely satisfied with her holiday installment so her extended story was placed in the proverbial pipeline.

Patience’s novel, Sex Fest, was originally started soon after Sex Holiday released. Over the course of a few years, I worked on her novel from time to time. In short, I couldn’t find the right way to wrap up her life with Mark and Spenser McCoy. Ultimately, I feared she would be “settling” and Patience isn’t the kind of woman to “settle” which is one of the things that makes her so interesting. Then another challenge occurred—she had an undeniable attraction to one of Clink’s bouncers, Baron Shanks.

While writing another Cowboy Sex story, I realized Patience and Baron had a very strong chemistry and it wasn’t exactly planned. He just kept popping up and soon it became obvious—Patience and Baron were a strong match.

Still, Patience’s final story remained on the back burner because it was impossible to do it justice until there was a specific threat within a natural plot. That opportunity came along when the Cartwells stepped in and tried to help their cousins escape their criminal father’s past. They asked for assistance from Patience’s fathers—Joshua, Aspen, and Patrick McKay—and once the McKays were involved, their daughter was placed in harm’s way.

In short, the McKays didn’t stop to consider what kind of retaliation they’d face when they offered to help protect young women targeted by the mob. As a writer, I finally saw the opportunity I’d been waiting for—the plot that made perfect sense.

Like the other Cowboy Sex books, this one finally unfolded as it should. In the end, I’m proud of Patience and her demonstrated growth. Those of you who loved her in Sex Holiday will hopefully enjoy her story even more now.

In this installment, you’ll also read about Alberto Baldini, the man who turned to the Cartwells and McKays to protect his daughters. Inevitably, Alberto placed the McKays and Cartwells in a direct line of fire. The complete Baldini story unfolds starting with Sexual Healing.

If you haven’t read the Cowboy Sex spin-off series, Contemporary Cowboys, consider picking up Sexual Healing. If you love Kane and Peyton as much as I do, Sexual Healing is a must-read because these two Sex Party favorites are caught in a somewhat compromising situation.

Four of the five Contemporary Cowboy books are complete and available now at Siren-BookStrand. In the meantime, I hope you’ll enjoy Patience McKay’s story, Sex Fest.

Thank you for reading Cowboy Sex.

  Chapter One

“Sit tight.” Baron snatched the garage opener from the sun visor and shot Patience a stern sideways glance. “And I’m not asking.”

Before she could respond, he left the car and aimed the keys in her direction. With the wok wok sound, the locks were engaged in an instant. Apparently satisfied, Baron walked ahead, sliding on ice before he paraded up the driveway and around the exterior of her home.

Patience scanned the yard, certain someone was watching them. Then again, that particular feeling wasn’t necessarily new. With collected family enemies, she’d learned to live with danger.

She didn’t have to like it.

Baron reappeared. Tall and built like an indestructible machine, he carried himself with the confidence often exhibited by a Navy SEAL or perhaps a Marine. At the very least, he looked like a badass with some serious attitude.

He pointed the garage door opener at the house. Assuming he must’ve thought it was safe enough to enter, Patience immediately unlocked her door and hopped out.

“Patience, I didn’t tell you to get out of the car. Go back.”

“Look, Mr. Man, I know you think you’re in charge here, but just because Mark and Spenser called in their favors, doesn’t mean…”

Pow! Puppow! Pow! Pow! Bullets ricocheted off the tin roof covering her neighbor’s shed. The impact from the gunfire made the ice and snow skip across her front lawn. Even more disturbing was the proximity. Several rounds had been fired right at her feet.

  “Patience!”

“I’m okay!” Pivoting left, she swung the car door open and ducked behind it, aware then of Baron’s heavy footsteps as he ran toward her. Fighting the violent tremors shooting through her body, she crawled inside the sports car.

Before she had a chance to gain her bearings, Baron was there. “Scoot over.” He didn’t give her time to respond. Instead, he scooped her up and tossed her over the console, propelling her body to the driver’s seat. “Damn it, woman! I told you to wait.”

Patience nervously turned the key. “I know. I’m sorry.”

Now the passenger, Baron clutched his pistol. At the same time, he aimed the garage opener at the empty space before them. As the door lowered, he yelled, “Go!”

She stepped on the gas and hauled ass forward, only to barely brake in time to miss crashing into the house. Behind them, another round of shots pummeled the back of her car.

“Damn it, Patience! I meant get out of here!”

She’d failed to notice the closing door. In the past, she’d managed to put on brave fronts. Now, she was mere seconds from blowing her courageous act. “How was I supposed to know you were shutting the garage?”

“Doesn’t matter! Drive!” Baron rolled down the window and flung his body over the side of her car, firing his automatic weapon. “Anytime now, baby!”

Jolting out of her debilitating angst, she threw the car in reverse and wheeled out of the driveway. Baron never stopped shooting into the trees that lined the vacant lot between Patience’s house and another neighborhood.

A second later, they were racing toward Fletcher. Shaking like a limb, she tried to pull it together, but it was no use. Someone had been waiting for her. They’d scoped out her home and treated her like a target.

Baron placed his hand on her wrist, apparently under the misguided impression that one touch would calm her in some way. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

She pulled in the emergency lane and slammed the gearshift in park. Then, she buried her face in her folded arms and took a few deep breaths. How could he promise to protect her after what he’d just seen?

“Patience, listen to me.” Baron’s voice was gentle. “As long as I draw air, nothing and no one will ever hurt you. Do you believe me?”

She lifted her chin and searched his eyes, desperate to put her faith in him. She wanted to take stock in everything he told her, but they were too close, dangerously close to betraying all sorts of trust. After an uncomfortable silence, she reluctantly nodded.

Never one to step over the line between friendship and an intimacy shared only between lovers, Baron brushed her fingers with his kiss. “All right then. Let’s find someplace safe and give your fathers a call. We’ll see how they want to handle this. Can you drive?”

“Can I drive?” She tried to make light of the situation when she stepped on the gas but the car only made that revving sound.

  She was in neutral.

“Guess I have my answer,” Baron said, exiting the vehicle.

Patience watched him walk in front of the headlights and for a moment, she was as lovestruck as she’d ever been. Baron was there for her. He’d fight for her and he would definitely try to keep her safe. Where were Mark and Spenser when she needed them? Her lovers, as usual, were playing gigs. Thanks to hit singles, they were always on the road.

Like Baron had casually mentioned, she acknowledged her share of answers, too. The answers were never really a problem for a woman in love. The questions were the issue. More often than not she found herself asking why she and Baron were wasting time dancing around the idea of something more than friendship.

Pushing aside thoughts that often drove her mad, she crawled over the console and collapsed against the bucket seat as Baron slid behind the wheel. He quickly reached across her shoulder and secured the seatbelt over her trembling form.

Patience’s breath hitched in her chest and she stared into his baby blue eyes. “Thank you.”

“For what?” He cupped her cheek and it was one of their more intimate moments. “I care about you, Patience. You know I’ll do anything to keep you safe.”

She couldn’t help but turn her face to his palm, nuzzling him. “Baron—”

“Don’t worry.” He dropped his arm abruptly. “I know my place.”

Wrought with guilt, she grabbed his forearm. “You don’t know your place and neither do I. And I’m tired of trying to figure it all out.”

  * * * *

“Look, we don’t know what’s going on. We’re here at the McKays now. Patience didn’t know her parents were out of town.” Not even an hour later, they were holed up at Patience’s family home. Baron rested his hand at his belt as Mark and Spenser McCoy pounded him with questions. “She’s fine. I’ll let you talk to her in a minute. As for knowing who’s responsible? Why…who would know?

“Cartwells are working on it now. Kane thinks there’s a possibility that this could be related to you guys, maybe a crazed groupie or someone with a vendetta. Lately, you two seem to enjoy pissing off the music industry executives.”

Mark said, “We may have some professional challenges ahead of us but nothing that would call out a hit on Patience. Sure, there’s bitter blood with Howell Records, but in the past they’ve had contractual issues with other artists and as far as I know, those entertainers are still around to talk about it.”

“He’s right,” Spenser said. “And groupies don’t typically kill wives and girlfriends. Besides, we don’t invite that sort of trouble.”

Baron believed him. “Then there’s a good possibility this is somehow linked to the Alberto Baldini situation. Kane acted real suspicious when I
asked him if this could somehow be related to Norina.”

“Cartwells and McKays have plenty of enemies now thanks to sticking their noses in that ordeal,” Mark pointed out.

That ordeal involved drug cartels, gangs, and the mob. Alberto Baldini had crooked everyone he could crook. To make matters worse, he’d left his five daughters in small town Erwin, Tennessee to fend for themselves. They’d done a fair job of taking care of one another with few exceptions. When those exceptions rolled around, their second cousin Kane Cartwell had been their lifeline. And apparently Kane only floated the lifeboats when the McKays were around to steer them.

  “You still there?” Spenser asked.

Jolted from his thoughts, Baron said, “I’ve been concerned about the Baldini situation. It was only a matter of time before the trouble over the mountain followed the McKays and Cartwells home.”

“I’ll talk with them,” Spenser said. “They’re so damned impressed with their connections that they haven’t stopped to consider who they’re endangering here. They may have poked the wrong bears.”

“Without question they have,” Mark said.

“Look, they asked for political help a few times and they called in favors from unsavory characters. It was only a matter of time before someone from the city decided to send a message. Patience’s fathers put her life in jeopardy and they should’ve stopped long enough to think about that.”

“Agreed,” Spenser muttered. “I’ll give Joshua a call tonight.”

Baron didn’t think Spenser would get anywhere but it was worth a shot. He had been concerned for a while now but after watching Patience dance her way out of a shootout, he would like to think her parents would at least listen to reason. Maybe if Mark and Spenser weighed in with opinions, too, one of the McKays would finally bend an ear. If the men wouldn’t, perhaps Patience’s mother Vicky would take a stand.
